Awakening Your First Graders’ Math Genius

Numbers live in the rhythms of the cosmos, in night and day, in plants, in stones, and in us. In fact, each of us is born with an innate number sense, a mathematical genius!

In this two-hour zoom workshop participants will explore how to awaken this genius in first grader’s thinking by engaging their will and feeling life. The workshop includes Patti:

• Leading participants in first-grade movement activities, number pattern explorations, inner picturing exercises, and math games.
• Sharing an overview of why and how these activities are so effective.
• Offering an example of a delightful running story of “The Land of Numerica,” that brings an imaginative but “real life” introduction of the four processes, the equal sign, and place value to first grade students.

Teaching Spelling in 3rd through 6th Grade

Have you noticed that it takes more time for children to learn how to spell words than it does to read them? Class teachers deserve to know why this happens and how to bring a lively spelling practice to their students that builds on their natural desire to find patterns.

In this two-hour zoom workshop participants will learn why and how to guide their students to discover the patterns and derivations of our writing system through a word study program, including how to assess their students’ spelling knowledge, organize your spelling groups and find word sort lists, create a weekly rhythm, and lead the students in effective, fun hands-on activities and games to learn their weekly words. Included in the fee is either our Grade 3 Developmental Spelling Curriculum Guide or our Grades 4-6: Spelling with Word Study guide, depending on your grade level. The sessions are not recorded.
